Why Robots Struggle to Match the Astonishing Abilities of Human Hands
the human hand is a marvel of complexity, boasting over 30 muscles, 27 joints, and a network of ligaments and tendons that provide 27 degrees of freedom. with more than 17,000 touch receptors and nerve endings in the palm alone, our hands seamlessly execute a wide range of tasks, from opening a door to playing a piano.

a life-altering innovation
sarah de lagarde knows firsthand how remarkable hands are. in 2022, after climbing mount kilimanjaro, she suffered a life-changing accident, losing her right arm and part of her leg. initially provided with a static prosthetic arm, she struggled with its limited functionality. but nine months later, she received a groundbreaking ai-powered bionic arm.

this advanced prosthesis detects electrical signals from her muscles and uses ai to anticipate and refine her movements. “every time i make a movement, it learns,” she says. over time, the ai begins to predict her actions, transforming simple tasks like picking up a pen into possibilities once again.

the challenge of replicating human dexterity
the complexity of human hands has baffled engineers and medical experts for centuries. attempts to replicate their versatility range from the iron hands of 16th-century knights to sensory-feedback robotic hands developed in 1960s yugoslavia. yet no invention has come close—until now.

ai is revolutionizing robotics, enabling prosthetics like de lagarde’s to approach human dexterity. robots are also learning to perform delicate tasks, such as picking strawberries without damaging them or extracting nuclear waste with precision. but despite these advancements, robots still face significant challenges in competing with the adaptability and responsiveness of human hands.

the development of dexterous robots mirrors how humans develop hand coordination. for instance, a newborn’s reflexive grip evolves into intentional movements as their brain and motor skills mature. similarly, robots using embodied ai learn by interacting with their environment, fine-tuning their movements through trial and error.

“traditional ai processes information, while embodied ai perceives, understands, and reacts to the physical world,” explains eric jing du, professor of civil engineering at the university of florida. this allows robots to perform tasks in a more human-like manner.

however, the human sensory system remains unmatched. our ability to detect minute changes and integrate inputs like vision, touch, and temperature makes human dexterity a formidable standard. “robots currently lack this level of integrated sensory perception,” says du.

the road ahead
while ai-driven prosthetics and robots are making remarkable progress, matching the natural abilities of the human hand remains a formidable challenge. advances in embodied ai bring us closer to this goal, but for now, the human hand continues to reign as one of nature’s most astonishing creations.
